Smart Building Solution
For people’s health and productivity in commercial buildings, temperature, humidity, and air quality are all crucial factors. SBS, or sick building syndrome, is a condition caused by elevated CO2 levels inside commercial structures all crucial factors. SBS, or sick building syndrome, is a condition caused by high CO2 levels inside commercial structures. Nations all over the world are creating increasingly sophisticated smart buildings to increase productivity, cut costs, and generally create a healthy environment for citizens and business owners. In addition, energy prices started to soar last year due to the impending climate crisis. There has never been a more pressing need for optimizing building energy usage.
Milesight and Peak Power collaborate to create a smart building solution for over 62 buildings, including commercial offices and educational campuses, in Ontario, Canada.
CHALLENGES
When sensors detect that pre-set thresholds have been exceeded, the AI-driven system requires accurate and real-time environmental data so that analysts can alert building operators and offer recommendations, or optimize the building’s operation to reduce operating costs. The existing sensor system had serious issues and performed poorly:
Poor Signal– Up to 60% of the onsite sensors were down at any given time due to the original solution’s reliance on a signal-receiving technology with poor signal coverage.
Excess Maintenance– High power consumption necessitated frequent site visits by building operators to swap out sensor batteries, significantly raising maintenance costs.
Extra Expense– A sim card was required for each temperature and CO2 sensor, adding an additional $500 per month for each floor.
Solution
Each floor has Milesight sensors installed to track building data, such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, occupancy, etc.
To provide extensive signal coverage, Milesight UG67 LoRaWAN® gateways are installed every three stories with PoE power input. The UG67 LoRaWAN® gateway can transmit data collected by the sensor using MQTT to Peak Power’s platform—Peak Insight—via cellular network thanks to an embedded network server and 4G module.

Results
Data-Driven Analyses
The AI-powered platform can forecast when energy use will peak and provide data-driven recommendations to lower lighting or HVAC use. The platform will also send alerts when indoor temperatures fall outside of the 21°C to 26°C range, humidity levels drop below 40%, increasing the risk of viral respiratory infections in occupants, or CO2 levels rise above 800 ppm, aggravating SBS.
Accurate Insights
Temperature, humidity, and CO2 are among the parameters of indoor air quality collected by the AM319, AM107, EM300-TH, and EM500-CO2 sensors. The occupancy of the space is tracked by VS121. Real-time transmission of this data to gateways is done. Building managers can learn practical information about indoor air quality.
Remote and Automated Management
Building managers can optimize and lower energy consumption by remotely turning on and off the devices using WS523 Smart Portable Sockets based on the recommendations. Operators can also remotely control the HVAC system to improve ventilation when they receive IAQ alerts.
Superior Indoor Air Quality
The combination of accurate IAQ insights, platform notifications, and simple remote HVAC system control ensures that tenants have access to the best air quality possible, increasing not only their comfort but also their productivity.
Energy-efficient and Eco-friendly Building
The solution is made up of three essential components: data-driven analyses, remote management, and precise and usable insights on energy usage and IAQ. This has significantly increased building energy efficiency and resulted in annual savings of tens of thousands of Canadian dollars.
